About GroundStop.app
GroundStop.app shows whether there is a ground stop, ground delay program or airport delay right now, in plain English, on a live map, with alerts and an API.
GroundStop.app is an independent project built for travelers, people meeting flights, frequent flyers and developers. It is not affiliated with the FAA or any airline. The FAA publishes its traffic management data in formats meant for airline dispatchers and air traffic controllers. GroundStop.app turns that data into answers to simple questions: is my airport stopped, for how long, and is a stop likely later today?
Where the data comes from
GroundStop.app combines official airspace status feeds, aviation weather and flight and aircraft data. Every source, with what it is used for and its licence, is listed on the credits & data sources page.
How it works
Updated every minute. A scheduled job reads the source feeds once a minute and stores a snapshot. The live pages show when that snapshot was taken.
Ground stop history. Each ground stop is recorded from the first snapshot that shows it to the first snapshot where it is gone, along with its stated reason and any extensions. The averages, counts and patterns on the airport pages and stats page are calculated from these records, so they cover only the time GroundStop.app has been running. Lengths are only counted for stops whose start was observed.
Times. The source feeds write times in UTC (also called Zulu, or “Z”). GroundStop.app labels them as UTC and, where the airport is known, adds the local time.
How AI is used
Some text on the site is written by an AI model: the national summary on the home page, the plain-English versions of air traffic advisories and the weather briefings on airport pages. Each one is labelled “AI-written”, can contain mistakes, and sits next to the status or weather data it was written from. Status, counts, times and history are never AI-generated; they come straight from the data above.
Limits
Information may be delayed or wrong, and programs can change at any time. GroundStop.app is not for flight planning or operational use. For the status of a specific flight, check with your airline.
